From the publisher:

England’s Nadir? is a revealing reassessment of a highly controversial period in the history of the England football team – the three seasons from 1974 to 1977 when Don Revie was at the helm.

This has long been considered the worst period in 160 years of the national team – but was it?

A follow-up to Chris Jones’s acclaimed debut tome England’s Calamity?, this eye-opening book:

- Explores Revie’s early life in 1920s and 30s Middlesbrough and his playing career and management of Leeds United
- Gives you match-by-match analysis of all 29 games for which Revie was in charge of England, with an assessment of all 52 England players from those 29 matches
- Re-evaluates Revie’s three years as boss against the longer term of England performances and achievements from 1950 to the present
- Shows how the memory of that period has been shaped and reshaped by a small number of voices (Ball, Hughes, Macdonald, Hudson and George); through 195 written sources the author brings forward other voices and opinions from the 52 players
- Offers a broader interpretation of areas Revie was consistently criticised for – the dossiers, bingo and carpet bowls and his personal superstitions and rituals
- Brings you the bigger societal picture of Britain in 1974–77, in particular the Troubles in Northern Ireland, trade union disputes, economic contraction and how the England team and English society became more entwined during the 1970s

England’s Nadir? is a must-read for all England fans and anyone interested in 1970s football.
