From the publisher:
Gone are the days when every self-respecting place in Britain had a distinctive football stadium. After the Hillsborough disaster in 1989, a wave of modernization began that continues to this day.
A few years ago, stadium photographer Marco Magielse started a tour of stadiums where things are largely as they once were. Standing stands, roofs with a bend, wooden grandstand seats and rusty turnstiles - these became trips down memory lane. Magielse tried to capture the old British football spirit. Many of the stadiums he visited will not be around long; almost The Final Whistle sounds to them .
In Final Whistle Magielse, the 'Dutch Stuart Roy Clarke', has photographed 21 classic British stadiums, namely:
- Ayr United FC, Somerset Park, Ayr, Scotland
- Bexhill United FC, the Polegrove, Bexhill-on-Sea, England
- Bohemian FC, Dalymount Park, Dublin, Ireland
- Brentford FC, Griffin Park, London, England
- Barnsley FC, Oakwell, Barnsley, England
