It used to be the big stages of German football: the Rothenbaum in Hamburg, the »Zabo« in Nuremberg, the World Youth Stadium in East Berlin or the Bökelberg in Mönchengladbach. Today those stadiums steeped in tradition have disappeared and the fans remember them with nostalgia.
Werner Skrentny went looking for clues across Germany. He describes the great history of these places of worship and also discovers former venues that are less well known. Among other things, he came across an international stadium in the small town of Kleve, Germany's oldest football stand in Kiel and the only stadium of the social democratic "Reich Banner" in Magdeburg.
Numerous historical and current photos complement the text. They impressively document the past and the changes in the German stadium landscape.
The author:
Werner Skrentny has lived in Hamburg as a journalist and author since 1978. He is the author of books on the history of the city, sports and football as well as travel guides (including New York). He is also the editor of books on the history of the football league south, south-west and Hamburger SV, for whose museum (permanent exhibition and various special exhibitions) he was responsible for the content. As an author he is involved in the following books about HSV: "Always first class", "With the diamond in my heart" (both together with Jens R. Prüss) and "Places of Passion". He has also published "The big book of German football stadiums" for the Die Werkstatt publishing house.
