This book turns the lens away from the football to show the faces and emotions of the supporters at the 2014 World Cup. Brazil is synonymous with football. Even so, no one knew what to expect. Massive street protests during last year’s Confederations Cup revealed frustration with stadium spending and a deep-rooted desire for change in the country. This year, the authorities braced themselves for more. But when football fans from all over the world arrived, Brazilians threw away their troubles and set about hosting one of the happiest, most exciting World Cups ever.

What was it like to follow the action in Brazil? It’s hard to think of anything that starts and ends in such different places as the world’s oldest cup competition. The journey undertaken by Joseph Fox and Orlando Gili as they captured the images for this book began in a crowd of 58 other lonesome souls at the London Tigers’ Avenue Park Stadium, a field by the M4 motorway the team had to leave just months later due to gratuitous fly-tipping. The road ended at Wembley Stadium, the 90,000 all-seater monolith that claims to be the cradle of world football. With a spirit of togetherness, Terry Venables and his players captured the hearts of the nation in a way not seen since Italia 90 - but Euro 96 had an extra edge. Played on <highlight>home</highlight> soil, it took place at an extraordinary time in British history. New Labour were poised to end a generation of Tory rule and Cool Britannia was on the rise, as a comatose culture had been revived and Britpop provided the soundtrack to it all. That communal spirit of June 1996 is recaptured in these pages. Since then it has drifted into its poor current form as the Europa League, the Champions League having siphoned off most of Europe's biggest clubs. Yet the UEFA Cup enjoyed some very stylish years, no more so than during the two-legged final period. It was an era when Ipswich Town swept to glory, Liverpool conditioned themselves to conquer the continent, Tottenham Hotspur twice captured the cup and Dundee United came agonisingly close. It was also a time when Borussia Monchengladbach made their name, Real Madrid regenerated as a force and Serie A came to dominate. This has led to his participation in the sport in a variety of ways, from amateur player to coach to writer. The son of Greek immigrants, George was exposed to the game as a young boy through kickabouts with his father. That, coupled with growing up alongside football-mad friends and reading magazines such as Soccer America and World Soccer, fueled an intense passion for the sport. After graduating from Keene State College, George became a freelancer in 2002. Since then he has had his work included in a number of publications including FourFourTwo, ESPN Soccernet, FIFA World, FIFA Magazine, Soccer International, Inside Soccer Magazine, 90 Minutes Magazine, Football Club Magazine, Greeksoccer.com, SoccerAge, and Goal.com. He has been a Senior Staff Writer for AGONAsport.com, the world's biggest English-language website devoted to Greek sport, since 2016. Tsitsonis has covered stories around the football world, specifically places and teams far away from the limelight. He has always specialised in covering Greek football and has written extensively on the Greek game. He has offered his views and opinions on Greek leagues, the national team, and clubs to various outlets from England to Colombia, from the United Arab Emirates to the Czech Republic. The lack of English-language coverage of Greece's unbelievable EURO 2004 success prompted him to write 'Achieving The Impossible', a book detailing one of the greatest shocks in the history of international football. George resides in Walpole, New Hampshire, USA with his wife and two children. He continues to work at his family's restaurant business while finding joy in writing and coaching football as well as losing to his kids in the backyard.

---

Fair Play Publishing

22 x 14 cm

Paperback

250 pages

June 2020

English

9781925914085

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0271/5149/9341/products/WhatsAppImage2021-01-14at09.09.52.jpg?v=1610615572
1966-and-not-all-that
1966 And Not All That

From the publisher:

A unique 50th anniversary collection of superlative writing and new football thinking.
