The album comprises walls photographed in the Polish city of Łódź. Located slap-bang in the middle of the country the place is home to one of its nation’s most vicious football rivalries.

In her introduction to the book Monika Łukowska describes it as an area where the fans are more active in their support and loyalty than are their teams own players. Although the description of a ‘fierce rivalry’ is so over-used it’s almost a cliché fans of the two Łódź teams, ŁKS and RTS Widzew, are pretty extreme. Whilst violently defending their housing estates they play out their confrontation on the walls of the city.

However the publication actually has a more satirical take on the hooligan graffiti of Łódź. The slogans recorded on the pages of this book are really the work of a writer who goes by the name of ‘Jan(usz) III Waza’. Bored with the violent insults sprayed all over the place Jan Waza began using up the dregs of his mates paint to respond to the city’s hooligans. The result was an ever increasing series of amusing and bizarre ripostes in the vein of the surreal graffiti of the Situationists. The initial response by residents to these childish slogans was that they originated with the hooligans themselves. Pictures of the newly painted walls soon began circulating on social media.

Conceptually this is a brilliant idea. To read on a wall that “ŁKS fans cook rice in a kettle” or that “RTS fans hallucinate on field mushrooms” is an entertaining joke. While in all fairness “ŁKS fans think House & Home is a magazine for thieves” could be said about Liverpool’s fans as well. Meanwhile the farcical “ŁKS fans make horseradish sauce out of apples” appears to be a completely ridiculous insult to write. Lots of the graffiti works because its absurdity is as impenetrable, as much of the hooligan graffiti is, to the outsider who views it.

Overall the RTS vs. ŁKS book is a nice collection of photographs that focuses on the content of the tagging rather than the aesthetic. Looking at Japan, the number of players playing overseas has increased dramatically, the internationalization of players playing in the J-League has progressed, and overseas strategies by leagues and clubs have become more active than ever. The joy of the FA Cup, and the joy of this book, is in trying to weld these two parallel worlds together even as you awe at their profound sense of separation.

This collection of images tells you that the secret to doing so resides in the eyes of the fans, the hope that lives there no matter the level of pomp, pay or pageantry – the only true constant, really,beyond that loyal collection of semi-circles and oblongs marked on grass, ancient cave paintings guiding home a spectacle that only feels more loved the more we fear it lost.

---

The Bluecoat Press

25 x 21 cm

Hardback

108 pages

November 2018

English

9781908457479

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0271/5149/9341/products/Cover_d6e9cb51-3684-4f87-96ae-45eae44bc066.jpg?v=1592492037
escapismo-2
Escapismo #2

From the publisher:

In Issue Two, we have looked to capture the contradicting rollercoaster of emotions that football can provide, from the incredible highs to the heart breaking lows, with a focus on the mixed fortunes that a variety of sides have experienced over time.

We have looked at some of the giants of the game as well as some of it’s less well known stories, with articles on Manchester City, AC Milan, Everton and England, as well as CD Cala D’Or of Mallorca and Sassari Torres Femminile of Sardinia, where guest Barley Nimmo shares his incredible photos and experiences following Italy’s most successful women’s team.

With a larger physical size and a host of beautiful illustrations from some incredibly talented artists, the magazine also features a number of interviews and exciting contributions.

We caught up with Cult Kits to discuss their favourite vintage football shirts and spoke to clothing brand Fourteen Admirals about the glory of Italia ’90 and the inspiration behind their designs.

Photographers Leah Lombardi and Harry Myers also share their projects and love of shooting the game on film, whilst we also spoke to Johnny Quinn, frontman of Liverpool band Spinn about all things music and Everton, giving issue two a broad range of original features.

We can’t tell you how much we enjoyed putting it together and are delighted to finally share it with you. While by no means a one-size-fits all solution to the issues that cause ill mental health, we believe the guide will go some way to helping readers develop emotional literacy while demystifying techniques men may wish to build into their daily lives.

---

25 x 17 cm

Paperback

152 pages

2019

English

9781527214613

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0271/5149/9341/products/Cover_e57977f2-be06-4e7f-8768-3f58f684e334.jpg?v=1595338233
scouted-football-handbook-volume-v
Scouted Football Handbook: Volume V

From the publisher:

The Handbook is back for the new year, and it's better than ever.

The Scouted Football Handbook is the most comprehensively detailed youth football guide.
